Opening Prayer
Heavenly Father,
With grateful hearts, we praise You for the glorious resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Thank You that death could not hold Him and that the grave could not keep Him. As I study today’s lesson, help me to understand the power and significance of Christ’s resurrection. Strengthen my faith, deepen my hope, and fill my heart with joy because my Redeemer lives.
May Your Holy Spirit teach me through Your Word and help me to live each day in the victory that Jesus Christ has already won.
In the precious name of my risen Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
Introduction
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the greatest victory ever recorded in human history. Without the resurrection, Christianity would have no foundation, the Gospel would have no power, and believers would have no hope beyond the grave.
The resurrection was not merely the return of Jesus to earthly life. It was His complete victory over sin, death, and the grave. Three days after His crucifixion and burial, Jesus Christ arose bodily from the tomb exactly as He had promised.
The empty tomb forever declares that Jesus Christ is alive.
Because He lives, every believer has forgiveness of sins, assurance of salvation, hope for the future, and confidence that death is not the end.
The resurrection is not simply an event to remember each Easter season. It is the foundation upon which the Christian faith stands every day of the year.
What Does “Resurrection” Mean?
The New Testament word translated “resurrection” comes from the Greek noun:

The Greek word ἀνάστασις means:
- A rising up
- Standing again
- Resurrection from the dead
- Restoration to life
- Victory over death
In the New Testament, this word refers especially to the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ and, by extension, the future resurrection of all who belong to Him.
The resurrection of Christ was not symbolic or spiritual only. It was a literal, historical, bodily resurrection that demonstrated His complete triumph over death.
Biblical Doctrine
The Resurrection Is the Foundation of the Christian Faith
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is essential to the Gospel.
Without it, Christ’s death would not have demonstrated victory over sin and death.
The Apostle Paul declared:
“And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.”

But praise God, Christ did rise from the dead.
His resurrection confirms that His sacrifice for sin was accepted by the Father and that salvation has been fully accomplished.
Every doctrine of the Christian faith rests upon the truth that Jesus Christ is alive forevermore.
Why Is the Resurrection So Important?
1. It Proves That Jesus Christ Is the Son of God
Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus declared that He would die and rise again.
On the third day, He fulfilled His promise perfectly.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead.”

The resurrection publicly demonstrated that Jesus was exactly who He claimed to be—the eternal Son of God.
No prophet, philosopher, religious teacher, or human leader has ever conquered death as Jesus Christ did.
His resurrection separates Christianity from every other religion in the world.
Because Christ lives, we know His promises are true.
2. It Confirms That the Father Accepted Christ’s Sacrifice
When Jesus died on the cross, He cried,
“It is finished.”

His resurrection confirmed that His work of redemption had been fully accepted by God the Father.
The penalty for sin had been completely paid.
Justice had been satisfied.
The debt of sin had been canceled for all who believe.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.”

The resurrection assures believers that they stand justified before God through faith in Jesus Christ.
Our salvation rests upon a living Saviour, not a dead religion.
3. The Resurrection Gives Believers Victory Over Death
Death is one of humanity’s greatest fears. Since the fall of Adam, every person has faced the certainty of physical death. Yet because Jesus Christ rose from the grave, death no longer has the final victory over those who belong to Him.
The Apostle Paul triumphantly declared:
“But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.”

The word firstfruits means that Christ’s resurrection guarantees the future resurrection of every believer.
Just as Jesus arose in a glorified body, all who have trusted Him as Lord and Saviour will one day be raised to everlasting life.
The Apostle Paul further declared:
“For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”

Because Christ conquered death, believers no longer live in fear of the grave. Death is not the end of life; it is the doorway into the presence of the Lord.
The Resurrection Gives Us a Living Hope
The resurrection of Jesus Christ gives every Christian a hope that is certain and unchanging.
The Apostle Peter wrote:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.”

Our hope is not based on changing circumstances or human promises.
Our hope is founded upon the living Christ.
Because He lives:
- Our sins are forgiven.
- Our salvation is secure.
- Our prayers are heard.
- Our future is certain.
- Heaven is our eternal home.
No earthly difficulty can take away the hope that Christ has given to His people.
The Risen Christ Lives Forever
Unlike every earthly king, prophet, or religious leader, Jesus Christ is alive forevermore.
The Apostle John saw the glorified Christ and recorded His words:
“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

The risen Lord now reigns at the right hand of the Father.
He intercedes for His people.
He builds His Church.
He strengthens believers through His Holy Spirit.
And one glorious day, He will return just as He promised.
The resurrection assures us that every promise of God will be fulfilled.
Practical Application
As you reflect upon the resurrection today, ask yourself these questions:
- Do I truly believe that Jesus Christ rose bodily from the grave?
- Am I living each day with the hope that only the risen Christ can give?
- Does the resurrection give me courage to face trials and difficulties?
- Am I sharing the Good News of the risen Saviour with those around me?
- Am I looking forward to Christ’s return with joyful expectation?
The resurrection should transform not only what we believe but also how we live.

Read Matthew 28, John 20, and 1 Corinthians 15 today.
Thank God for the empty tomb and for the living Saviour.
Then encourage one person by reminding them that Jesus Christ is alive and that everyone who trusts in Him has the hope of eternal life.

Lesson to Remember
The resurrection is not a secret to keep—it is the greatest news to share. Every believer has the privilege of telling the world that Jesus Christ is alive.
Closing Prayer
Gracious Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the glorious resurrection of Your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. Thank You that the grave could not hold Him and that death has been conquered forever. Because He lives, I have the assurance of forgiveness, the certainty of eternal life, and the hope of spending eternity in Your presence.
Help me to live each day in the power of the resurrection. Strengthen my faith when I face trials, fill my heart with joy when I become discouraged, and remind me that my living Saviour is always with me. Give me courage to proclaim the Good News of the risen Christ with love, humility, and boldness until He returns in glory.
May my life continually testify that Jesus Christ is alive, and may everything I do bring honor and glory to His holy name.
