“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Introduction

Before the Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven, He gave His disciples one final command that has become the mission of every New Testament believer. This command is known as the Great Commission. It is not merely a suggestion for pastors, missionaries, or church leaders. It is Christ’s command for every Christian.

The Great Commission reveals God’s heart for the lost and His plan for reaching the world through His people. Every believer has the privilege and responsibility of proclaiming the Gospel so that others may come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

1. Every Christian Is Commanded to Go

Jesus began His command with the words, “Go ye therefore.” The command to “go” reminds us that Christianity is an active faith. We are not called merely to wait for people to come to church; we are commanded to take the Gospel wherever people are found.

Whether in our homes, communities, schools, workplaces, or across the world, God calls every believer to be His witness.

This command is echoed in:

Mark 16:15 (KJV)

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.”

The Gospel is God’s message of salvation for all people without distinction. Every believer should seek opportunities to share the good news of Jesus Christ with family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and those who have never heard the Gospel.

2. Every Christian Is Called to Make Disciples

Jesus instructed His followers to “teach all nations.” The idea is not merely to gain converts but to make disciples—people who believe in Christ, follow Him, and continue growing in obedience to His Word.

Discipleship begins when a person trusts Christ as Savior, but it continues throughout the believer’s life. Mature disciples learn God’s Word, obey His commands, develop Christlike character, and help others become disciples as well.

Paul expressed this principle in:

2 Timothy 2:2 (KJV)

“And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.”

Healthy churches are built through faithful discipleship that multiplies from one believer to another.

3. Every Christian Should Encourage Believer’s Baptism

The Lord commanded His disciples to baptize those who believe in Him.

Baptism does not save a person. Rather, it is the public testimony of someone who has already trusted Jesus Christ as Savior. It identifies the believer with the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ and demonstrates a willingness to follow Him in obedience.

Believer’s baptism is one of the first acts of obedience after salvation and is an important step in becoming an active member of a Bible-believing local church.

4. Every Christian Should Teach God’s Word

Jesus continued,

“Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.”

Evangelism is only the beginning. New believers must be taught the Scriptures so they can grow spiritually, resist false doctrine, and faithfully serve the Lord.

Bible teaching includes:

Learning God’s Word daily.
Developing a consistent prayer life.
Living a holy and obedient life.
Serving faithfully in the local church.
Sharing the Gospel with others.

Spiritual growth is a lifelong process that prepares believers to become faithful servants and future disciple-makers.

5. Every Christian Can Depend on Christ’s Presence

Jesus concluded the Great Commission with a wonderful promise:

“And, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

The work of evangelism and discipleship is not accomplished by human strength alone. Christ Himself promises His continual presence with those who obey His command.

The Holy Spirit empowers believers to witness boldly, endure difficulties, and faithfully proclaim the Gospel until Christ returns.

Why Every Believer Should Share the Gospel

Every Christian has a responsibility to share the Gospel because:

Jesus Christ commanded it.
Every person needs salvation.
The Gospel is God’s power to save those who believe.
Eternity is at stake.
God desires all people to hear the message of salvation.
Sharing Christ demonstrates our love for God and for others.
The local church grows as people are saved, baptized, and discipled.

God has entrusted His people with the greatest message the world has ever heard.

Practical Ways to Fulfill the Great Commission

Every believer can participate by:

Praying daily for the salvation of others.
Sharing the Gospel with family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers.
Inviting people to attend a Bible-believing church.
Supporting missionaries through prayer and giving.
Participating in organized evangelism and outreach.
Teaching new believers through discipleship.
Using books, Bible studies, websites, and social media to spread God’s Word.
Living a Christ-centered life that reflects the Gospel.

Every Christian can be involved in God’s mission, regardless of age, occupation, or location.

Conclusion

The Great Commission is the heartbeat of the New Testament church. Jesus Christ has commanded every believer to go, preach the Gospel, make disciples, baptize believers, and teach them to obey His Word.

This responsibility belongs to all Christians—not only pastors and missionaries. Each of us has been entrusted with the privilege of pointing others to the Savior who died for our sins and rose again.

May we faithfully obey our Lord’s command until every opportunity has been used to proclaim the Gospel and every nation has heard the message of salvation.
