Can a Christian Lose His or Her Salvation in Christ?

“Examining the Biblical Doctrine of Eternal Security”

One of the most frequently asked questions among Christians is, “Can a Christian lose his or her salvation?” This question concerns the very heart of the Gospel because it relates to God’s grace, the finished work of Jesus Christ, and the believer’s assurance of eternal life.

The Bible teaches that salvation is entirely by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ. Those who have genuinely repented of their sins and trusted Christ alone as Savior are eternally secure because their salvation rests upon God’s promises, not upon human effort or personal merit.

The Biblical Answer

No. A true believer in Jesus Christ cannot lose his or her salvation.

The Bible clearly teaches the doctrine of Eternal Security, meaning that every person who has been genuinely born again is kept by the power of God forever.

Jesus Himself declared:

“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.”
— John 10:28 (KJV)

The words “never perish” are one of the strongest promises found in Scripture.

1. Salvation Is the Gift of God

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
— Ephesians 2:8–9 (KJV)

Salvation is God’s free gift. Since it is received by grace and not earned by works, it cannot be maintained by human effort.

2. Eternal Life Is Truly Eternal

Jesus promises eternal life, not temporary life.

If eternal life could be lost, it would no longer be eternal.

3. Believers Are Sealed by the Holy Spirit

Meaning

  • To seal
  • To secure
  • To certify ownership
  • To guarantee

God Himself seals every believer until the day of redemption.

4. Christ Keeps His Sheep

Jesus said:

“My sheep hear my voice… and I give unto them eternal life.”

Notice that it is Christ who keeps His sheep.

Our salvation is secure because our Shepherd never fails.

5. Nothing Can Separate Us from God’s Love

Neither death…

Nor things to come…

“…shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

6. Christ Finished the Work of Redemption

When Jesus died on the cross, He declared:

“It is finished.”

  • Paid in full
  • Completely finished
  • Fully accomplished
  • Perfectly completed

Our salvation rests upon Christ’s finished work—not our imperfect works.

What About Christians Who Sin?

Believers still struggle with sin.

However, sin affects:

  • Fellowship with God
  • Joy
  • Spiritual growth
  • Christian testimony
  • Eternal rewards

But it does not cancel God’s gift of salvation.

God lovingly disciplines His children.

“For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth…”

What About Those Who Leave the Faith?

The Apostle John explains:

“They went out from us, but they were not of us…”

Their departure demonstrated that they had never truly belonged to Christ.

Our Assurance of Salvation

Our confidence rests in:

  • God’s grace
  • Christ’s finished work
  • God’s unchanging promises
  • The indwelling Holy Spirit
  • The faithfulness of God

Practical Application

Because our salvation is secure:

  • Love Christ wholeheartedly.
  • Live a holy life.
  • Serve Him faithfully.
  • Grow in His Word.
  • Share the Gospel boldly.
  • Thank God daily for His saving grace.

Eternal security is never an excuse for careless living. Instead, it motivates believers to love and obey the One who has saved them.

How to Receive Jesus Christ as Your Personal Savior

If you have never trusted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, God invites you to come to Him today. Salvation is not obtained by good works, religious ceremonies, or church membership. It is received by God’s grace through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ alone.

The Bible declares:

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:”

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved…”
— Acts 16:31 (KJV)

“Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out…”

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

Three Biblical Responses

1. Believe in Jesus Christ

Believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God who died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day. Trust Him alone as your Savior.

2. Repent of Your Sins

Repentance is a sincere change of mind and heart that turns away from sin and turns to God.

3. Place Your Faith in Christ Alone

Do not trust in your own goodness, religion, baptism, or good works. Place your complete faith in Jesus Christ and His finished work on the cross.

A Prayer Expressing Faith in Christ

Prayer itself does not save us, but it is one way to express genuine repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

Dear Heavenly Father,

I come before You today acknowledging that I am a sinner and that I deserve the penalty of my sins. I believe that Jesus Christ is Your Son, that He died on the cross for my sins, was buried, and rose again from the dead.

Today I repent of my sins and turn to You. I place my complete faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone as my Lord and personal Savior. I receive Him into my life according to Your promise in John 1:12. If You Have Trusted Christ Today
